[Video] HDC Turban Pattern Tutorial

The videos below walk you through the entire 'hdc turban' pattern found on headhuggers.org. I have written permission from Sue of HeadHuggers.org to do this tutorial.

HeadHuggers.org is a charitable program that brings crafters of all kinds together to create hats and get them into the hands of people going through chemotherapy, which causes the individual's hair to come out. The belief of HeadHuggers.org is that the person has enough to worry about with worrying about their head being cold.

In order to follow along with these videos, you will need to use the written pattern located here (will open in a new window):
http://www.headhuggers.org/patterns/cpatt22.htm

Hopefully this pattern will help those struggling with the pattern get through it and have a wonderful hat suitable to give away to someone who can use it.

ROWS 1-3

ROWS 4 and 5

ROWS 6 and 7

ROWS 8 to end

Is there a tutorial available for the shell pattern?  that is the puzzling one.

thanks for the HDC one.  It was helpful.

I do not currently have a tutorial for the shell pattern but as soon as I find my flip cam (lost it since the move OOPS) I will make it one of my first additions. Thanks for the suggestion and you are very welcome for the hdc tutorial :) I'm glad people find them helpful.

Thank you!  I have been confused about the increase count. Your videos are great.  Appreciate them.

Hello Chris..Thank you sooooo...much for this tutorial...I've viewed several tutorials on how to maintain a straight seam when crocheting in the round. Unfortunately, I couldn't get that straight seam. I am excited about the fact that I am able to duplicate your instruction, and I created my first hat with a straight seam. Counting the chain 2 as a stitch, and placing a stitch in the very last stitch next to the chain made everything click for me.

Thank you again, and keep up the excellent work.

I just made this, but I must have done something wrong! The hat looks like it was made for a giant! The diameter of the crown at the end of row 7 is 5". It measures 7 1/2" from crown to brim, but it is way too wide. I am not sure where I messed up. My crochet stitches are what I'd call medium tighness, not too tight and not too loose, either. I have to add that I am a beginning hat maker, so I am not sure about the sizing.

I forgot to say that I really enjoyed your tutorial. It was very easy to follow.

The best way to size is to "eyeball" it - when you get to a point that it covers just the crown of your head (use it as an average), stop your increases. I know its not "stop at this row" specific - but eyeballing hats is usually how I do them on my own when creating my own patterns. Something you can do is either go down a hook size or buy yarn a little thinner than what you used for the big hat.

Thank you, Cris. I was afraid to deviate from the pattern! I am starting to learn how to do things better.

Well I've made one hat already got ready to gathered it in the center ( guess it wasn't the way you did it) I just had to watch the video again, to see how you finish off. I think my mistake was I had my yarn start from the bottom instead of the top above 4" where you started, needleless to say it didn't come out like yours. So I'm now making my second one .The pattern it self was very easy to follow until I got to the end to form the front of hat. How do you know where to start the beg. of the U shape? My back seam ended up being crooked. But I'm not giving up. Thank you for the video's details it was very helpful. But have to improve on making the front looking better. Thank you Wanda Mucciaccio

Hi, i was working on the shell version (learning how to read patterns) and it came out beautifully but waaay too small.. like is a very snug fit on the head of a mannequin, the hat looks like it fits a child or toddler. Why so small? Did I not put in enough shells a row?

Sooo sad the only video that works is the last one, really need the first two esp. My line is going on a curve not straight. Color I chose doesn't show too badly so will continue use with first one but would love to know beg. Where those two st. So important. TYSM for pattern

Thank you for the video, because no matter how many times I read the instructions for the pucker, I wasnt gonna get it. Sometimes, you just gotta get help!

I have just worked the shell pattern for 9 rows but I can see this is not going to work :( I think the problem lies in the instruction at row 6 (rows 6-16) which gives the impression that you repeat row 6 x10; this results in a very domed shape suitable for a garden gnome!! I think the pattern should read: repeat rows 1-6 twice (or how many times you need for your size). Can you advise please.

Shelia Cook. I love this, and I work on Oncology floor, and make them for the lady patients, and they put broaches and some I make a flower. I learned off your video how to gather it to make it look turban. Thank you so kindly. I makes my heart proud to make it for my floor at Barnes Hospital.

I made the Shell Stitch version for an adult. Can this pattern be adjusted for a child with a head circumference of 20.5?
Thank you.
