I'm packing my bags and strolling over to Wordpress. Of course, with this move, I'm making the title a little more generic to yarn so that I can better order everything around and not feel bad when my posts are dripping with other yarn crafts - not just crochet.

I know I know - my blog. But as particular as I am - I think its just best.

I will be doing all my main posts over on the other site (iyarny.wordpress.com). I will come here occassionally with a reminder post to go read the other site - mostly when I post new patterns.

I need to spend a large amount of time reaching out to third party pages, mostly pattern directories, so have them remove the old link and add the new. I also need to adjust the new site visually to be more "me" and transfer all my patterns to PDF files.

It is going to be a HUGE effort and I hope you choose to pop over to the new site and follow.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14901513524552405607noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6884416285402915069.post-1928510341135329732014-10-17T07:47:00.000-05:002014-10-17T07:47:00.132-05:00Respect Your Designers

I design patterns and publish them - albeit all but one are free.

Respect designers of all kinds - it may seem silly to pay for something you can pass around under the table, but its discouraging to the designers to think they are not appreciated enough for those few dollars a pattern generates.

It started with my admin screen within Blogger showing I had comments on posts - but when I went to the post... no comments. I checked my email - and there were email notification on the comments that apparently did not exist on the post. So I removed the Disqs module because its really just an overlay to the blogger comments, but ended up with lots of comments on my posts - just on the wrong posts!

So if you comment and I do not see it, I'm blaming Blogger right now. If you want to help me test, just post a comment to this post OR go back one or two posts and post a comment there - (just specify you are commenting on a certain post to help test so then I know if it shows up on the wrong post or not).

Anything to help and again, my sincerest apologies.

If I could find an easy way to change all the links to my patterns, I would totally change over to word press.

Totally.

I even have the URL reserved.... iyarny.wordpress.com

Any suggestions?

I'd say comment but I don't know if it would work or not.
Its the silent type because who wants to see a 38 year old woman pout over not being able to participate in a MKAL (mystery knit-a-long for all you non-fiber folks out there who may have stumbled upon my blog).

As of the last few months, I have been trying to knit and crochet from my stash. A few yarn purchases have

My Messy Yarn Room (main stash)

been made to top of certain projects, but that's about it. I think 2 balls of sock yarn are about my only "non necessity" purchases I've made in the last 6 months... and by "non necessity" I mean - it was needed. The yarn was awesome, I didn't have it and I wanted it. Therefore - it was a necessity purchase.

This yarn diet is self imposed. The Man really doesn't care - heck he benefits from my little fiber addiction. I don't have to not buy yarn when I see it, but I'm just trying to knock down what I have to make room for what I don't have.

About a month ago, I ran across a MKAL honoring Marie Curie ... wha wha whaaaaa? Science, Math and Yarn. That is a triad of awesomesauce right there! (ok, I threw in the Math because its part of the forum, not necessarily the MKAL - but that's just how my mind works)

Here is a link to the Ravelry Group, just in case you are interested.

Anywhoozles - so here I am thinking I'm going to get in on the action early on. I head to my stash and dig. And I dig. And I dig... and I come up with NOTHING. Nadda. Not a darn thing. I need two light weight yarns, sock weight would probably do because I knit so tight, to give me a gauge of approximately 9-10 stitches per inch. Two colors are necessary - and knowing the mittens the host creates, I know the colorwork will require two extremely contrast colors so the pattern will show up. I have all sorts of self striping and variegated colors but not real solids. I have a soft heather grey - nothing to go with.

So perhaps I shall check my favorite local yarn store... Nadda. He was in the same boat I am in - lots of colored/variegated yarns, but no bold solids.

I go online but sheesh - shipping stinks for 4 tiny skeins of yarn (at this point, let me mention that I am somewhat of a cheap skate). So... no ordering unless I have a coupon or am able to order with several other people (the yarn group I meet with weekly sometimes does that - but not at this very moment). I am such a naysayer on shipping that I actually checked Amazon.com to see if there were any nice yarns covered under my prime membership ... nadda there as well.

So now, here I sit - the MKAL has officially started and they are moving into the second clue. I'm looking at the spoiler pictures because apparently not only am I a shipping fee naysayer and cheap skate, but I am also a bit of a fiber masochist. There are some absolutely gorgeous mittens being worked up and I want to be one of those people - but I have no yarn.

Looking for the silver lining - at least not having yarn for the MKAL has forced me to continue focus on the Christmas crafting...

(Granted, this weekend we are going to head over to a couple other yarn stores nearby and I'm going to look there - they are larger than the one here in town so there is a good chance I'll find my yarn. Silver Lining Adverted.)Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14901513524552405607noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6884416285402915069.post-7092024832242354392014-10-05T08:44:00.001-05:002014-11-20T08:58:23.569-06:00A Small Bag [Pattern]

Pivotal shows that 1 of 6 items are complete and one... finished this passed week - go me!

*self high five... ya know, if that is a thing*

I could probably have been much more productive if I didn't spend a lot of time knitting off the list. Oops? But truly - who is really surprised here?

I did end up finishing one pair of socks. Last week I had reported I finished sock 1 and started sock 2. Sock

2 didn't take any time at all - mostly because the yarn I was using was a little thicker than I normally use so I ended up whipping through those with size 4 DPNs.

These will be a Christmas present. Right now they are the root of a scandalous lie! You see - the person wearing the socks in the picture is actually the person that is going to get them for Christmas. I told him they were for his dad - and then when we are all together, I said they were for my step dad.

Oh the lies!

These socks were the only YOP2014 list item I worked on this week. I spent one day working on a school spirit hat that ended in an epic fair isle fail, which I blogged about (here, if you are interested).

I also ended up knitting up a tiny little bag. I had started writing the pattern with a specific purpose in mind, but I don't think the little bag will work - but its a cute little bag ... and it felt good to be writing a pattern again. I will most likely put the pattern up here for free either today or early next week. I think it would serve great purpose as maybe a tooth fairy bag, a barbie accessory, or ... I dunno. Something that requires a very small bag.

Here - I present Exhibit A - the actual issue.

As you can see, between my P and A on the lower side - the yellow is sticking out! I did the floats above and around those that are peeking out the exact same way as the ones that are peeking out.

So why in the frackin' world are the ones sticking out. And to boot - its like this randomly around the whole hat.

It's very frustrating.

I used this video as a tutorial on how to carry floats: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dtDGR2NM9-Q

The blue is not peeking through any of the yellow although I will admit, the stretch on the hat makes the yellow look crappy. I said it... crappy. It makes it look crappy. Even worse - I want to join in an MKAL that will require me to do a lot of fair isle and quite frankly, I'm not sure I want to ruin the yarn.

So... how I did the catching of the floats is this - I would knit the first color after the color change and then the next stitch, if it was the same color I would catch it in the fashion explained in the video I linked above. Then knit, catch, knit, catch in the same fashion until I did a color change. The first stitch of the color change would be a regular knit, then the next a catch - so on and so forth.

Please - if you know what is wrong or you have a video/written tutorial reference - send it my way via the comments. If you post a link, I'll have to approve the comment (and I will) but just know that if it doesn't post the comment immediately, that's what it is. I am asking for your help - I don't know what I'm doing wrong and any guidance you can offer would be greatly appreciated.

I will say though, my floats look fine as brandy and wine!

I had an offsite visit for work on Thursday which landed me 6+ hours in a van with 4 male coworkers - which also meant I got a LOT of work done on that sock - in fact, by the end of day yesterday, I had finished the first sock of the first pair on my YOP2014 list... and that is WITH a migraine.

The car time on Thursday was funny - but the gents definitely asked a lot of questions about my hobby. They

are intrigued at the idea of hand knit socks. All I know is there is something funny to me about complete IT junkies
(we are all IT workers) looking at yarn through a different light. I was
asked about yarn, fibers, buying alpacas, sheep, angora bunnies,
washing, wear, repair, longevity....

One of the guys actually asked me on Friday about socks - so I have a feeling an order will be coming my way. There is something magical about the idea of a seamless sock (well, at least to me there is).

The picture I'm including here is another minion hat... it was sitting in the "need to finish" pile - and I decided to take that 10 minutes and get the eye on it. This will be a Christmas present for my grandson - and of course, is not in the YOP2014 listing.

What I would like to specifically point out about this Minion hat is that the eye is actually over the area of the color changing row.... so what? you ask - that means that the blue/yellow change is ALSO a color change and honestly, I'm pretty darn spiffy happy about how seamless the join looks! I have no idea how I pulled it off, but I think that was pretty decent - and I have no idea if I'll ever be able to make it that seamless again *ha!*

In other news, I've had a horrific case of startitis this week. I need to focus on the items on this list - because some of these are actually for Christmas too. If I didn't have to work a full time job *winks* (I'd probably still have the same pile of things that need finished ... but it would just be a bit bigger)

God Bless, all :) I hope you have a happy and productive week!
This pattern review is for the crochet pattern "Baby Yub Nub" written by Kristen Stevenson. A link on Ravelry can be found here.

The pattern is written as infant size and, as you can see by the image, I was in need of toddler size. I made a decision to stick with the suggested yarn size, worsted or aran, and simply go with a larger hook. Admittedly, I wasn't sure if only changing the hook size would be a good plan to upsize the garment mostly because I crochet rather tightly. I was prepared to make a second just in case it didn't work. I ended up making a second - and ironically enough, the first one fit just fine.

What the pattern has:
The pattern itself is a free Ravelry download which means you will end up with an Adobe .pdf file. Personally - this is my preference. Being linked to a blog to retrieve a free pattern is acceptable, but if I want to print it out, that means there is a lot of copy/paste and reformatting on my part to get what I need out of the blog.

When it comes as a .pdf, that means the formatting is already done - I may have to review the page breaks of the pattern to make sure I print as few pages as possible. Some of the .pdf files I get can be pretty image intense (lots of pictures for pictures sake, not pictures that add true value to the pattern). For this pattern, the title page was a little image intense with a large picture, but the pattern started on page 2. I read over the 1st page to get a listing of materials and understand the stitches necessary and simply didn't print that page once I had all the info I needed.

Short story: saved me ink - that made me happy.

Getting to the pattern, it is well written and very clear. The row by row approach made it very easy to follow. In the end, I probably didn't need to print the pattern out at all. Lesson learned on my part. I like that the pattern offered up how to make the hood part deeper to accommodate a bigger head, which is nice.

One disconnect I noticed was that the images on the pattern appeared as if the hdc stitches for the main piece were created by doing the hdc stitches in the back loop only. Doing this creates a stretchier fabric. When I read the pattern, I could find no mention of doing all hdc stitches in the back loop only. Perhaps I missed it?

I believe that the ear instructions were very clear and would have produced a good ear had I not modified that part of the pattern to make a fuzzier ear.

What I would have liked to see:
I think the pattern would have been better if some additional instructions had
been included on how to resize the pattern, ie making it fit an adult or teen by adding more rows to the first section or how to add more stitches for a longer garment.

Adding in instructions on how to calculate out making the hood longer or shorter would have been helpful. For the 142 cast on, you end up with 140 stitches across, so you have 40 on each side of the first rows and the hood is made from 60 stitches (40-60-40). If you want to make a shorter hood, then you add to the 60 stitches, and take the difference (say you made it only 50 so you end with a difference of 10), you add 5 stitches to each end so you end up with 45-50-45. making a longer hood would require making a longer starting chain and recalculating the stitch balance for the hood.

Of course, at this point, I would expect Ms. Stevenson to begin charging for her pattern - even if its 50 cents. While I was able to accommodate my needs, I do not think the majority of people like dabbling around in the math - so its always good to see it included in the pattern whenever possible. But - really, once the designer starts doing this, expect to pay a little something for the efforts - or at least consider a donation if the pattern is still free.

As for where to crochet into the stitches for the hdc stitches, when I looked at the finished projects of others who had made this
pattern, they did not do the hdc into the back loops. I started out the first row not doing
it and made a very quick decision that I wanted a
softer, more pliable fabric. I ripped out that row and went with doing the hdc in the back loop only. Because of this, I do believe the pattern should have specified
where the hdc stitches were being put.

With the ears - while the instructions provided were good, I would have liked to see some direction on
where to stitch the ears into the hood as well as perhaps some options for different ear types. I ended up crocheting the circles together as instructed but then surface crocheted around the back of the ear so the entire back side of the ear was fuzzy. I saw a picture on one of projects finished by other uses and saw some tiny, almost prairie-dog ears - those were very sweet and would be especially cute on a Yub Nub made for a newborn.

The Rating:
Because I cannot rate a pattern on what I *think* should have been included, I am going to give this pattern 4.5 balls of yarn out of 5. The clarity of the instructions was very good and the formatting of the pattern itself was nice. It is written well enough for a beginning crocheter to tackle with little to no issues. The only real improvement that could be made with the pattern as it is presented is stating where the hdc stitches are supposed to be: back loop only or under both loops. A more experienced crocheter may get the same impression I did with the images looking like they were hdc in the back loop only but no direction is given for this.

I will most likely be making more of these little hats. They are really adorable!

Now that I have afforded myself the ability to focus on my rather short, but relatively intense list, I didn't do one spankin' thing on any of it this last week. Nadda darn thing.

And that, my dear readers, is how I roll. *laughs*

Ok - its not that I didn't work on anything. I ended up getting a hat order from a person at work which meant I was getting paid to have startitis - but this startitis was with direction. I ended up crocheting an ewok hat (well, 2 because I wasn't comfortable with the sizing presented in the pattern the first time I made it) and a minion hat.

I do not frequently do character hats but one is for playing and the other is, per his mother, going to be his Halloween costume - and I am all about hand made Halloween costumes. I should block about those sometime *smiles*

OH - I did pick out some yarn for one of the pairs of socks (they will be a gift for my son) and rolled it into a ball.

That's progress, right?
Winter was bitter and crazy. Spring was really summer. Summer was spring at least for most of it then turned to summer quickly at the end of August. Autumn is starting out summer but quickly moving into autumn... and I like the idea of that!

I opened the door Monday morning to let the dog out and the bitter air just reached out and took me by surprise. Autumn, you see - is my favorite season. The colors are absolutely gorgeous, Halloween is on its way, and quite frankly, its inspiring for the fiber artist - a little chill in the air makes you want to knit up those socks, whip out a sweater, or sit in front of a fire with needles/hook in hand, working away at a blanking. Autumn is the absolute bestestestestest season.

So, since it was a bit chilly, I ended up wearing a couple bits of my hand knits.

The first are the socks I finished about 2 weeks ago. They are made with Kroy sock yarn which I picked up at Joann's. Large self stripping pattern - warm and cozy and grand.

Does anyone else have the same unhealthy passion I do for hand knit socks? Like ... the feeling that they are magical or like walking with little clouds of loved wrapped around your feet? No... just me? uhm... a'righty then.

The other hand knit I wore was a Kwoosh I finished earlier this year. I used a Crazy Zauberball for this one and adore how it came out.

This is me "modeling" it.

I admit - I am still learning about how to wear <strike>shawls</strike> <strike>shawlettes</strike> <strike>anything-around-my-neck</strike> neck scarfs. I think the only thing that slightly (if you can even use any qualifier at all) bummed me out on this one is the stripping started out in big sweeping sections and because the shawl is asymmetrical, the width grew which means the sweeping sections became distinct shorter rows of color changes. Obviously, I knew that was going to happen but I guess I thought I'd have a little bit more of the sweeping sections...

Oh well - still love it. *winks*

Here I am, only two weeks from my last <strike>confession</strike> WIP Wednesday post.

I'm actually pretty happy with the progress I have made since my last post. The quick overview is that of the four projects posts in my 8/20 post, I have actually made progress on two of them and finished the other two.

Granted, this means I epically failed in posting an FO Friday post - but we can't all be perfect... or make regular blog posts.... *coughs lightly*

BUT, I have made progress... and I have also added new projects to the active listing. *face palm*

So, let us take a snapshot from my Pivotal (linked on the right), shall we...

As you can see I finished the Kwoosh. I also finished the stripey socks I showed in the 8/20 post, they are just outside of my current iteration (ie, I finished them before August 31st).

I added several rows to the Illusion Knit, which I hope the recipient doesn't read this blog!

The Lapghan Made with Squares (the Walled Garden Square to be specific) grew a little bit. I finished off a square I had in progress for the last month or two and joined it in with the others, completing another strip and attaching it to the first strip. Oh - and all ends are weaved in. *whoop whoop*

I really don't count the Scrap-ghan as a WIP even though it really is. It's like people who say their are vegetarians but eat fish - I just add to it as I have the yarn so in reality, that thing will be a WIP for the next several years.

I added the ewok hat and minion hat because I got an order yesterday for them. I am knocking those out relatively quickly, which is a pleasant reminder to why I like crocheting certain things as opposed to knitting.

And, of course, socks - I "started" them by picking out the yarn and winding the first lil skein into a ball ... oh, and I put it in my sock bag *winks* Major progress there.

Watch for a pattern review of the ewok hat along with the release of a knit pattern by yours truly in the very near future.

Simply because I do not like having a blog post without some form or a more personal picture (or at least

something of a real life object instead of a screenshot from Pivotal), here is a picture of our cat. I will have to explain sometime about her paralysis ... hence the diaper. If you want to see pictures on her on any of my social media sites, just look for #knittykitty.

I like this photo since it shows of my knitting and our favorite lil orange cat, snoozing away.

God Bless!
A'right.. so I need to own up to my YOP 3 list and discuss my 2014 list.

First, let me say outright that I love the idea of a Year of Projects. I love numbers and I love analysis - tracking my work for a year is actually something I find really fun (don't judge) and I will keep doing it. Heck, I created a Pivotal Tracker for my yarny adventures - that is linked on the right if you wanted to check it out.

What I do/did not like is the YOP project group on Ravelry was split year... each year. It is a strange split for me so I made a decision to just cut the tie with that split and do an actual "year of projects" by year. I'm sure the group is ok with this - its just a different split, one that makes more sense to me.

But in order to make this split - I need to wrap up my previous YOP 3 listing. I did some clean up when coming up with the yop2014 listing, which is, of course, smaller since we are coming to a close of this year. Below is my list from YOP3 and where it stands as of now and if incomplete, if its being added to yop2014.

YOP3 List
- Navajo Diamonds Blanket - DONE!
- 10 pairs of socks - 7 of 10 DONE!
- Sweater for the Man - DONE!
- Spats for my daughter - not done
- Fingerless mitts - DONE!
- Scrap-ghan (did a Corner 2 Corner design) - DONE!
- Knit a wearable for me - DONE!
- Summer Flies Shawl #2 - not done and not added to yop2014 list
- Summer Flies Shawl #1 - DONE!
- Lapghan for a gift - DONE!

YOP2014 List
- The remaining 3 pair of socks were added to this list
- Spats for my daughter
- Illusion Knit - new to this list, was not on YOP3 listing
- Lapghan #2 - new to this list

So in reality, outside of 3 pair of socks, a pair of spats, and the second Summer Flies shawl, I didn't do half bad on my YOP3 listing. I am hoping to have these done (with the exception of Summer Flies #2, which was completely dropped from the list) done by the end of the year along with the additional items on my 2014 list. Everything, excluding the lapghan, on the 2014 list are Christmas gifts, so I had better have them done by the end of the year *laughs*

I'm a little hesitant mostly because I don't see where I can put in a picture.

It's Saturday morning... both kids are up and actually in the same room but it is quiet as can be. All I can here is the downstairs shower. The Man must be up too.

I took a photo of the shawl I finished yesterday and even posted a vine of it. Vine... that's a new spot for me, now linked on the right; albeit I'm not so sure I'll be posting frequently there. My non-blog update spot remains Instagram.

Heck, I even posted on YouTube this morning. It's been 2 years since I last did that. This shawl is inspiring *laughs*

So what is on the menu today? No clue... last weekend I said nothing was going to happen and I ended up at a Cubs - Cards game with the man and our friends - complimentary tickets in hand. So who knows where the day will take me. I'm only sure that no matter where, I'll have some yarn with me.

Boy oh boy do I not want to do this post *laughs*

Truth be told, I have had a bit of project ADHD lately.... hopping from one project to the next, bookmarking pattern after pattern - no real direction but a lot of distraction from one yummy fiber to the next.

What I am hoping for is that if I post what I'm working on... all of it.... then perhaps it will shine a light on how crazy it is and help me grab a little focus in wrapping up these projects.

It may not seem like much to some, but for me and my schedule - its causing scatter brain!

Be warned that while the blog is "Crochet with Cris" - I do lots of things with fiber so I inappropriately named the blog. Later on, I started with Creations by Cris, which is what the blog should have been.

Onward!

First up is the most ignored of all the WIPs - a lapghan.

I used this pattern to create a Christmas present for my sister-in-law last year. I am switching out one row for another stitch pattern, but it is very similar. The goal for this item is to be sold - the money to be used as our Christmas money. That means I had better get my rear in gear because I only have a few short months until Christmas.

The pattern I am using as the base (not with the modified stitch pattern I mentioned) is the Walled Garden Square. It is a free pattern on Ravelry.

I need to make roughly 24 more squares, I think... I'm scared to count, before I am done. Oh, and of course stitch them together. I am doing my best to weave in the ends as I go on this one just so its not such a tedious job at the end. Of course, I say that for EVERY afghan I have ever made and ... in the end, I slop out, don't do the ends until the end of the entire project and grumble the entire time I am doing it. I'm trying to break tradition - but I'll have to report on that when I get to the end.

This is a Kwoosh, also a free pattern on Ravelry. This will be the second one I have made. The first apparently never made it to my project page. I am knitting this in Dream in Color yarn - and I'm loving it.

What makes this one special as well is that my daughter, Squirt, is also knitting one. Oh, did I mention she started knitting with needles a few months ago? She did loom knitting and finger knitting but has just recently made the transition to needles... of course, that's another story for another time.

I work on this one semi-regularly. It's a great pattern for a car ride because it is so easy to memorize and execute. It's also good for movie watching. Granted, because I have a few projects going on, this means that I am not spending my focused time on it. I would like to have it done by fall so I can wear it to work. I love the colors and the feel of the yarn - the Man got it for me for my birthday this year... or was that Mother's Day? Either way, I love it.

This is where my primary focus has been... bad, Cris, bad!

I know I have mentioned a few times over that I do love to make socks. I don't know why but when I tried the afterthought heel on my last pair and was left disappointed in the result, I immediately cast on another pair to make up for the "blah" left behind.

I believe I may write up my "basic sock pattern" and get it up - I don't know if I want to sell it for .99 (its easy but a lot of effort has gone into it) or just post it for free and call it good. Who knows.

I'm using Kroy sock yarn and using DPNs, as you can see in the image. Granted, when I got around the heel, I switched over to 2 circs just to ensure I didn't have any laddering around the heel turn. What stinks about this WIP is the sock is ready to cast off. I wanted a nice little ankle sock albeit with a little height. I am ready to cast off and put on the next sock. For me, which my schedule, one sock takes approximately 1 week so that means by this time next week, if I could get my patooshka in gear, I could have a new pair of socks. Step one - cast off this sock!

And finally, one of the most interesting knits I've done in a long long time.... and no, I can't show you!

It is a Christmas present for my brother. As I explained in previous posts, for Christmas we draw names. The name you draw is the person you make a hand made gift for. Yup - you can buy as much as you want for anyone one you want, but the name you draw - that's a home made gift. I have gotten a cool ring holder my daughter made out of a glove and a skeleton necklace and earring set from the same daughter. My husband has my name this year so I have my fingers crossed for a wooden cutting board.

Inside this basket is a knitting style I have never done before.... creating the pattern alone took over 8 hours.... I researched and read and read and researched to ensure I got this right. I'm about 25% complete and hope to have the knitting portion done by the end of September, which gives me October and November to do the rest of the project. I will definitely have photos (and video, I'm sure) of this one. I think you'll enjoy it as much as I am - and I really hope my brother loves it too.

So this is my WIP Wednesday. Just having it all laid out helps. I know I know - its only 4 projects... but for me, that is craziness. Of course, I didn't even count the two scrap-ghans I have started. I feed my left over yarn into them so they don't grow all that fast. They take years to finish but in the end, I think they are as beautiful as any color-planned project simply because they are a good colorful reminder of all the work I have finished in order to build the scrap-ghan.

I hope you have a great Wednesday - God Bless!
- C
Oh happy day.... as promised, this post is going to be pretty image intense with several shots from the State Fair.

This glorious image to your left is that of my win - third place with the Navajo Indian Diamonds Pattern afghan. I'm pretty pleased with the win - jokingly I had said "as long as there were more than 3 entries, then it is good" - and of course, being a State Fair, there were more than 3 entries and I am very happy with my win.

As you all know, I tend to assess my win against those that entered and the others that placed. I have to admit, the first place winner (pictured to the left also, under mine - the wine colored entrelac) was good - I was not a fan of the color BUT I will say that the gauge was spot on and even, nice and tight.

I did not like the second place winner. I hate to say that out loud, but its the truth. I do not think it should have paced at all. It was a basic ripple in double crochet. The gauge was not strong at all and the color choice made me wonder if a dart board was involved in the decision process.

This is an image of all three winners... you can see the pattern of the entrelac was rather random, but at least the colors matched. The second place winner, pictured next to mine .... it was just... strange. Very very strange. If the person who created that afghan is reading my blog, I will say that I wouldn't turn it down as a gift - I'm sure its just as warm as any of the other blankets - but it just didn't look better than some of the others. In fact, there was a white blanket (which somehow escaped my picture taking festivities) that I would have given 1st, the entrelac could then have had 2nd, and I would have been more than happy in third... again. Truly, the entrelac and mine were about even-stevens when it came to actual construction.

This is a shot down the whole.... the fourth case, cut off in the image, is where that really awesome white blanket was. But, as you can see, there were several entries in all the categories with 5-7 afghans/bed spreads in each display. A rather impressive showing.

In all honesty, there were very few amigarumi entries and even fewer pillows, shawls, socks, bibs, etc.... the baby blanket category had a good turnout but the real focus in the hobby building this year seemed to be quilted items.

Outside of the quilt-ghan looking afghan with the barn on it, I was surprised there were no graph-ghans presented.

I suppose I should also apologize for the shape of the pictures.... I took them with my phone (if that wasn't obvious *laughs)

So that is pretty much it - I am going to leave you with some other images I took. Many were behind glass so it was hard to get a good photo, but I succeeded in some cases.

I hope you have a great day!
Thumbs Up to Third Place at this year's State Fair!

The majority of folks give a grumble or some comment about certain individuals not knowing how to judge good work... I disagree. I understand they are trying to make me feel better about not placing higher, but in reality, I don't need it. I'm excited to have won third.

No.. wait...

I am THRILLED that at the STATE fair I placed third out of all the entries of "Crocheted Afghans - in one piece".

I genuinely cannot wait to get out there and see who placed above me and the entries that may not have placed at all. I know it takes a lot of work to put everything together for an afghan, so place at all is really awesome.

I will be going out to the fair next week to take some photos so look for gratuitous fiber arts photos coming soon!
I have no idea what the title of this post has to do with the creation of socks, but its all I could come up with. *laughs*

I do know that I really enjoy making socks - and while I normally use two circular needles and sometimes occasionally one circular, nothing seems to make me feel more "in touch" with my "knitting heritage" like using bamboo double pointed needles.

Am I the only person that feels like this?

I genuinely have no idea why but I sometimes venture to think it is the appearance of a seemingly complicated technique down to the idea of my actually possessing some form of coordination in my fingers (because I definitely don't have it in my feet - as my dancing surely proves). Perhaps its the imagery of pioneer women adventuring to the West, sitting high atop a covered wagon with their needles in hand (I doubt I'd be coordinated enough for this one).

I finished the socks pictured above last week - completed on DPNs and found myself casting another pair

on last night - same needles, different yarn.

What is your favorite method of "going in a circle" while knitting - DPNs? Two Circs? One?

Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14901513524552405607noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6884416285402915069.post-29163526790790637072014-08-05T09:15:00.002-05:002014-08-05T09:15:15.971-05:00Where am I... I know I do not appear to update my blog very often and well, for the last however many months that would be a true statement, but I didn't even think to let everyone know that I actually have been posting regularly in that time, just not specifically "here" - so the question is - where?

All those locations are linked on the right side of the blog.

So why am I bringing this up now?

Because I'm adding two more "where am I" locations - Instagram and Pivotal Tracker.

In all reality, I believe Instagram is the most updated of all these sites. It is just so easy to grab my phone and snap a photo to share. Throughout the entire time I was not posting here, I was posting to Instagram regularly. Granted, there you have to tolerate all sorts of photos; albeit the majority are fiber related.

Pivotal Tracker is a little different - it is really just a spot to track my work and my progress - to show what I'm working on and what I have finished and when. It's a tool I use at work and find it completely applicable to what I do as far as my crafting. I will be using it to do my year of project (YOP) report outs for the blog.

Just thought I'd let you all know.

Hope you have a great day!
I am thankful I didn't go more than a year away. I admit, I got pulled in a few different directions and lost sight (and vision) of my blog. Losing Google Adsense didn't help any - and they still refuse to re-instate my account, which is a shame. The only reason I do not move to WordPress is because I do not want to lose the patterns and work I have put into this blog.

But in the end- I should never have let it affect me. It should not affect my sharing my work, reading about yours, and publishing patterns.

I have realigned some of my responsibilities since last I posted so hopefully I can remain on track this time.

So, what have I been up to?
I am a sick sick person *laughs*) Is to start a tracking device. I will be linking that and referencing it as I move forward. I will do a summary post for YOP 3 and my intentions for YOP 2014.

One big goal was that I finished the Navajo Diamonds Afghan a few weeks ago.

I'm pretty happy about it, as you can see. *chuckles* I have this one in the State Fair which starts in a week or so. I drop the actual afghan off this weekend - so I'm pretty excited about that. Hopefully it does well. Knowing the amount of talent out there (from the year of the Beastghan), if I get second I'll be happy. Anything better than second will be fiber art gravy.

Even though it has been a long time since I last posted, I hope to reconnect with everyone and get back to enjoying the relaxation my blog always offered. I hope you are all well, readers and I look forward to conversing with you again.
It is safe to say I am absolutely wretched at posting my weekly updates. We are how many months in and this is my third update ??? *face palm*

How exactly does this happen? The good news is that I haven't stopped actually knitting and crocheting - just the updating part. So here is my attempt at getting everyone up to speed on what I have done thus far.

I hurt my foot so I've not been able to do a whole lot of extracurricular activities outside of sitting - and when a Yarny is sitting, we all know what happens - yarny goodness! The silver lining of the injured foot is I have finished several items.

I finished the Lapghan I<strike>'m making</strike> made as a Christmas gift. I will do an update for that one on its own. I like how it turned out. The biggest surprise to me on that item is that I used the Caron One Pounder yarn, which - let's be honest here, is rough as all get out. It is not the most pleasant feeling yarn straight out of the skein. But, I gave it a good wash and that darn thing is soft SOFT S O F T. Its really nice - it just seemed to "work" after the wash. So I think the recipient will be happy. This lil finish brought my percentage from 21% to 26% for my YOP list. Go me!

I also finished two knit bookmarks, not on the list, but they are for Christmas as well so I might as well give them mention.

I do have a pair of socks on the needles... both of them. I started out trying to do them both at the same time using the magic loop method - but I will tell ya, Yarny Readers who knit, I don't like using the magic loop very much. Perhaps if I were using it for one item, then it would be fine, it just seemed a lot more time was spent in adjusting the loop and getting ready to knit than I normally do. I finished both toes with all increases so its not like I didn't give it the ole college try. I will try again for a pair of fingerless mitts I want to make, but it will only be one mitt. Or I may try it on a cowl or something. I don't think its a matter of I just couldn't figure it out - I did. I really just didn't like it for what I was doing.

Since breaking the two socks away from each other and running 2 circulars into each, In about 4 hours total I have knit up one entire foot, turned the heel, and started on the leg AND worked some of the foot on the second sock. In that same 4 hours, I barely got the toes going when I had them all on 1 circ.

As I said, I'll try again - just not with a 2-at-a-time sock situation. I am considering 2-at-a-time on 2 circs though.... we'll see if I go crazy with that one.

As for the Navajo blanket, I have less than a foot left to go. Soooo close! Once I muster up my motivation (ie finish all my other projects) I'll do a huge push to get that bad boy done.

So that's it. I finished the lapghan and continue to work.
I was able to complete one pair of socks this last week raising my total percent complete from 16% to 21%. Its always very exciting to see the percentage go up - isn't that the beauty of tracking a list of items?

I did not post an update to the socks I completed this last week so this is an image of those socks.

I am really pleased with how these turned out - the stripes lined up (almost) making them practically identical. I used yarn purchased from Knit Picks in the colorway Stream Bed. I admit I was hoping for a wee bit more blue, but in the end, they are rather nice.

They are quarter length socks made for barter.A friend of mine from yarn group agreed to make me a winter hat for a pair of socks. I said ok but then another said that it was a bad deal - I should get at least two hats for a pair of socks. Without my interjecting that one was enough - it was agreed upon! I already have the "practical hat" ready and waiting for me in the closet - and she is working on the second hat. I'm very excited for both. I do love to barter!

Anyone who is a reader that is interested in bartering? I have a PO Box I'd be more than willing to share *smiles*

I have not made progress on the Navajo Diamonds Blanket - I think I am going to save it for my September Rush project. I am approximately halfway done with the Lapghan I am making as a Christmas Gift. By approximately, I mean that I am exactly halfway done with the squares BUT I need to calculate in the time it will take to do the border. I cannot wait to share that as a finished item.

I did finish another Christmas present yesterday - I knit a hat! Even more crazy - I knit a hat in ONE DAY! I

fancy myself the slowest knitter this side of the Mississippi - regardless of which side you choose, I'm sure I'd win.

The pattern is called the Fisher Cable Hat and was designed by Lindsay Felice. I used I Love This Yarn brand yarn in a nice forest green color. No - I did not look at the color name on the ball band prior to tossing it. It uses around 200 yards of yarn so a very nice stashbusting type pattern for any knitter.

I did add 2 rounds of the plain stockinette at the top of the hat and decreased down 1 more row than shown in the pattern - and I think it is a very nice hat. I did it in about 8.5 hours so that means the more experienced knitter could knock it out in oh.... 2 or 3 *smiles*

The only reason I am sharing a picture of it here is because I am pretty sure the recipient of this hat is not a blog reader. But if they are - I'm not using their name or relationship to me... so HA - it can still be a surprise.

From my update it does appear as if that I have put my hooks away and exchanged them for knitting needles... and that could not be further from the truth. It just so happens that my crochet projects are projects best left at home. A knit sock is a small take-about type project that works well for me. So do not think that crochet-with-cris is turning away from crochet. I'm still hookin' with the best of them. *smiles*
This post is serving two-fold. First, my twitter feed from my blog posts seems to be broken. It has posted automatically up until Jun 30th... and it hasn't picked up anything since. So - this is a test. This is only a test....

And of course, the part that is not a test - I want to share my current SIPs with you. For those of you who don't know, SIP stands for Socks In Progress. Wednesday's have traditionally been used to share Works In Progress, or WIP Wednesday - but since this isn't my only WIP, ... here is my SIP on Thursday. *smiles*

I am using sock yarn I purchased from Knit Picks. Without getting the label, I believe it is the Felicci line in the colorway "Stream Bed" - I really do like the colors but it seems there should be more blue. But that's just me.

I am making them as a barter item with a friend in the same yarn group - for 1 pair of socks I am getting 2 hats. The original deal was 1 hat for 1 pair of socks but someone else in the group said that was not a fair trade - socks were much more complicated... so she volunteered two hats! Pretty exciting stuff if you ask me. I know she had cast on the hat last week and the band was pretty much complete the last I saw - I am purchasing the yarn for the 2nd hat (since I have weird yarn preferences - and by weird, I mean different than the majority of my yarny friends from yarn group).

Anywhoozles, enough about the trade. I am pretty happy with how the socks are working up. It is a self striping yarn so in order to get the stripes this close, I think I did pretty good. I'm about 1 knit row off - which isn't bad. I don't think it will be noticeable until I get to the heel. Of course, I could make 1 sock 1 row shorter than the other so then the heel turns look almost spot on. What do you think?

So.. in the last week I added 1 item that I forgot about: Summer Flies Shawl (number 1 and number 2 because I will be making a second). My first Summer Flies update post is here. I really like how it turned out and would recommend it to others who can knit.

I continue to make squares for the Lapghan that is in progress (and is a Christmas gift). I currently have 12 or 36 squares complete. For anyone interested, I'm using a pattern called the Walled Garden Square. I'm joining them with a single crochet into the back loops only and will make up a border when the time comes.

I finished a pair of socks and have another pair on the needles. I am almost done with the first sock so they are going really quickly. Gotta love that. I have decided that I will be making a pair for my mother's fiance for Christmas - those are probably going to be next in line.

I am also considering doing a sweater for my daughter for Christmas which means that the sweater for the Man may not be my first sweater. I don't know - I'm still lulling that one around in my head. I will admit, I'm a wee bit scared of doing a sweater. It is truly intimidating to me at this point - I don't know if my skills are that good or my pattern reading... and many of these patterns have charts. Any words of wisdom out there?

So that's been my week. Sock knitting, lapghan crocheting.... and I know I need to light a fire under my hind end to get the Navajo Diamonds blanket complete.
