Year of Projects: Week 29

Project Percentage Complete: 76%
Overall Percentage Complete: 83%

Number of Project Items: 21
Number of Added Items: 160
Total Items:181

Hey all! What a great week. We ended up with our first snow and lots of fun stuff going on at work so I feel my crochet has "suffered"; however, I have finished a total of 10 squares to be sent off to the SIBOL project and have made some designer tweaks to the pattern I was making for the throw for our living room sofa.

About that throw.... I purchased the book Aran Afghans to Crochet by Bonnie Barker and published by Leisure Arts. I looooove these patterns - they are gorgeous! But I have a problem with certain stitch combinations - 1) in doing some of them because they don't seem to lay right for me and 2) some I just don't like how they come out visually next to other stitches in the pattern. I posted a video on YouTube a few days ago showing the first square that I did for the pattern titled "Tan Sampler." I ended up doing some rework to the pattern to make sure I wasn't using awkward stitching (for me) and stitching that I didn't like as a combination. I'm pretty happy with what I'm coming up with but I don't think I'll be showing my progress until I get a square 100% the way I want it to be.

Other than that, I'm just chuggin' right along on my charitable giving projects. I will have to start a project for a swap I joined that has to be completed by February 25th. I'm pretty excited about the swap. I know what extras I'm going to put in the package, I'm just trying to figure out a good crocheted item to drop into the box too.

I went over my numbers quickly so I'm not 100% sure they are spot on, but I know that they are pretty darn close, if anything.

As always, I like to include a picture with my blog posts and when I don't have any of my crocheted goods, I default to some other strange picture from my cell phone.

This one is a play-doh worm critter created by my daughter..... I think it's pretty darn cute.

The worm is cute.

I always like the fact, once I became more secure in my knowledge of crochet, that I can alter any pattern I want if I don't like the stitch pattern or the way something looks.  It's nice to be able to do that isn't it?

Love your pic and can't wait to see your square when you are 100% happy with it.

Loving the playdoh creature.  How fun is that.  Sounds like you've been busy and are making good headway on your list.

Liking the worm, are you sure you didn't make it? I can't resist when the kids have got the playdoh out to have a good squidge myself!

It is a pretty spiffy worm, isn't it :) I will neither confirm or deny my partaking in play-doh fun but I will insist that I did not make THAT worm :P

Slow and sure seems to be winning the race

Hopefully I'll have something in the next couple of days. We shall see :)

Oh, its definitely nice. I do wish, sometimes, that I could just let the little things go though and just follow a pattern straight through and be happy at the end LOL

I'll pass it on to the daughter - she loves making fun stuff like that.

Perhaps in crochet, but that's about it LOL

Your number of added items cracks me up. :) And yet you're still making great progress!

That's a great square you've created so far for the State Fair piece.  How adventurous you are.  Good luck and keep us posted.

I had a look at your video and think that afghan will be gorgeous.  Would it be possible for you to maybe change those two rows of reverse sc and substitute some other stitch?  Other than that, I really don't know what to suggest --- all your options have merit, and it sounds as if you really love the pattern, so ..... perhaps keep going and if there's a particular square you're really not happy with then just try it again or change it.  I'll be interested to hear what you decide.  Oh, and good luck in the State Fair.

Ya know what's really sad? I think I missed some items! I wanted to get a relatively good idea of what I make in a year..... and right now, it's looking kinda ridiculous LOL

Thanks! That book is FULL of afghans like this :)

The book I found has some really gorgeous pieces in it. I am still working on my square and yes, I have replaced out the rev sc with something else, but now I'm trying to find a good balance that still comes out a 12 x 12 square :P

Thanks for the link to SIBOL - I think I might make a square or two to send!
Adorable little Play-doh expression!

I'm having a similar situation with my yarn stash. I am trying to get a relatively good idea of how much yarn I've got and how long it's going to take me to use it ... "and right now, it's looking kinda ridiculous" :)

What a lovely afghan pattern!  I looked at your youtube video, but sadly, I don't crochet so I can't offer any advice.  It was fun to put a face to your blog though! :)  Your daughter's play-doh creation is adorable.  (secretly: I still love the smell of real play-doh!)

Dear Cris,
I have free instructional video support for all my stitches at BonnieBayCrochet.com. I think this should clear up any difficulty with the stitches. I pleaded with Leisure Arts to include my videos with the leaflet, but low and behold they did not agree. Such is life as a designer! Thanks for trying the patterns anyway.

Warmly,

Dear Cris,
Thank you for your kind comments on the Aran Afghans Leaflet. Just wanted you to know that free instructional videos for all the stitches are available at BonnieBayCrochet.com. It was my desire to include a video of these stitches with the leaflet, but Leisure Arts did not agree. Oh well, such is life as a crochet designer! So many of us are strong visual learners, and sometimes plain words and stagnant photos won't do. Blessings to you...

Warmly,

Thank you so much for your comment. I am flattered you even found my little hole on the internet - I still plan on going back and finishing the squares in the leaflet even though I ended up going a different route with the throw (that turned into a blanket *laughs*). I think its awesome you have the instructional videos available on your website. I definitely appreciate the idea of videos trumping stagnant images when it comes to crochet!
