K is for Knots

I really struggled to stay away from the word knitting for two reasons: 1) I think a lot of other people will write about it and 2) I have talked a lot about knitting on this blog as of late and I really want to get back to something crochet related.

Of course, finding a topic specific to crochet, other than K hook, is kinda hard. And I decided to divulge a little secret about my crafty self for the blog.

Wanna know the secret?

I suck am terrible at getting knots out of yarn. When I get yarn vomit, I have to call on the man to help. If I try to take care of it, then I end up getting frustrated, cutting it and throwing the mass I haven't worked through away. I hate working through knots. I have no patience for it. The man, on the other hand, has some freak-level of patience when it comes to getting knots out. He will sit, watching TV, patiently pulling here, feeding yarn there, shifting it around until it all comes out ok.

I have no idea how he does it.

Of course, I learned this about myself early on and know that I should take the skein and roll it into a ball before I start. I see people work from the skein - it's just not something I can risk. If I get to the end of the skein and the yarn gets knotted, then I'm done. Winding it into a ball before I get started is the best thing that I can do for myself, my project, and my nerves.

So how about you, reader - are you good at getting the knots out? I heard rumor there is a group on Ravelry dedicated to turning yarn vomit into useable yarn.... could you possibly enjoy getting the knots out? Let me know!

There is indeed an untangling group on rav, they find it soothing or something ;) I've only dealt with yarn barf once and it drove me mad but I was determined to untangle it all. Luckily it was cotton, so didn't stick to itself but still, not fun!

That was funny!!  I am one of those people who can get knots out and everyone comes to to do it.  I don't know why I can, just as you don't know why you can't...  one of life's big mysteries!!

I am very good at getting knots out and I don't mind doing it.  I have to be in the right mood however or I do what you do and hack away at it with a pair of scissors.  I find that if I am not in the right frame of mind, I put it aside and find something else to do until my mood improves, then I go back to it.  Pulling it out of the center and getting it knotted doesn't bother me as much as having to frog things and then getting knots.  That drives me nuts because I'm very careful when I pull things apart and it still ends up knotted sometimes.  Not everyone has patience to deal with it.

I hate yarn barf!! Thankfully both my Bf and bestie are very patient so they are charged with dealing with the barf, I undoubtedly always make it worse!

I do ok with yarn vomit. What I really hate is the knot that you get when the manufacturer has joined another length of yarn. Do you know what I'm talking about? If I'm knitting for myself, I just move on...but if it's gift knitting I have to cut it out which means more ends to weave in. grrrr.

Yep, I'm one of those sad people who will sit happily for hours getting the knots out.  I find it quite absorbing.  I have learned never to knit from a skein, I always end up with a mess which is very time consuming to sort out, even if I do find it a satisfying pastime.

I don't enjoy getting the knots out and do get frustrated sometimes with it but am usually willing to sit there and do it. I try extra hard to set myself up to avoid knots though!

I find untangling knots strangely soothing (assuming I'm not under pressure to finish the project!). No idea why. Must ask my BFF who is a psychologist... (then again, maybe I'd rather not know!)

Actually, yes!  When I was in college, my grandmother used to buy yarn that way to save money.  I would go over there and we would have a "desnarling" party.  This brings back wonderful memories.  Thank you so much.

My husband stares at me in amazement as I sit there, sometimes for hours, trying to untangle a chunk of yarn.
I also attend many estate auctions and buy junk jewelry.  I love to sit, again for hours, untangling clumps of  jewelry.

I'm also lucky enough to have the man to call on when I have yarn barf or some sort of serious detangling to do. So it's also best for me to roll it into a ball as soon as I can since he works very long hours and isn't around to do the job very often.

Yarn vomit makes me anxious but at the same time it gives me this determination that 'vomit will not beat me'. lol.  My solution is to hold the whole thing up in the air and shake it, holding one end up. Then roll up what you've shaken out, then hold it up and shake again. It's time consuming but it works. I learned a long time ago, you can't pull when you have it all messed up. It will knot for sure.

I have tried shaking it but my patience isn't that good *laughs* I will keep it in mind though when the man isn't around and I've found myself in a pile of yarn blah :)

AMEN!

You should be in that Rav group ;) Ya know, my daughter doesn't do well with yarn barf but she actually likes detangling jewelry - I think for her its because she knows that when she's done, she'll have something fun to wear.

ohhhhh what a great memory! I must admit, the idea of buying yarn barf to save money may be incentive to get used to detangling.

Well, I have a psych degree and I can't explain it *winks* jk jk

Glad to know I'm not the only one although I applaud you for sticking through it!

Oh I know exactly what you mean! With crochet I can go over it (most of the time) and have no problem BUT I am finding there are some crochet stitches that are too whimsical and you have to split it - there is no way I can work around it in knitting - I have to split the yarn.

hehehe the man, I think, prefers I just bring it to him without messing with it first. :)
