I is for Itemization

OK - so I was at a total loss on what to write for an I that could remotely be related to crochet.... so I thought why bother with straining my brain to come up with a word - let the internet do the work for me.

And I found this: a random word generator. I said to myself "Cris, you will take the first word that starts with an I and make it work for crochet"

And lucky me - I got the word itemization. Now THAT I can relate to crochet. What I can't relate it to is my own stash and crochet equipment.

This is some of my stash.  I will admit that it is pretty much the majority of my stash which really makes me feel a lot better.

The issue with this and how it relates to itemization is that before we moved, I genuinely had no idea exactly what I had. Seeing things together has made me feel a wee bit guilty about my yarn purchases (but not enough to stop me on Sunday from buying 2 balls of sock yarn and a skein of Caron)

Hmmmm ok, the move just made me realize I had more than I thought - I still have no idea how much of what that I do have. A few folks have suggested that I look into Ravelry's stash organizing tool.

Now, while personally think Ravelry offers a great service for people to be able to organize their stash, share what is in their stash with others, and overall, provide a great yarn itemization tool.... I just don't happen to use it.

In all honesty, people who know me would expect that I'd be all over itemizing my stash and crochet tools/equipment. I am a pretty particular person and have been considered somewhat "strict in my organizational skillz" (yes, I deliberately used a z and avoided the word perfectionist). I am not sure where the disconnect is, but it is obvious that one exists.

I couldn't tell you what is in there without looking... so to you, dear reader, I ask - if someone stopped you on the street right now and asked you what was in your stash, could you answer them? (although I admit it would be weird if someone just randomly stopped you and asked you about your stash... if they did, I'd personally consider a home security system, pepper spray, large dog and/or a taser)

And when setting up my schedule to post, I realized that today is July 4th. Happy Independence Day to my fellow Americans!

I do use the ravelry stash tool, because I like to see it all laid out and know how much I have (also, it helps when I'm trying to link things to patterns as all the details about weight and yardage are right there)... But because it's all stored there, there's no way I could fully answer the stranger's random question!

At the moment I'd have no problem remembering what I have, as I don't really have a big stash yet. I do use Ravelry's stash tools though, as I like to know how much I've got left over from each used skein without having to weight them every time!

I pretty much know what is in my stash.  In fact each skein of unused, waiting to be used for that project that I specifically bought it for, yarn calls out to me every time I pass by my closet.  What is also weird is that my stash seems to know when there is even the tiniest thought in my mind that I might want to visit my favorite LYS. Yep, my stash is expert at laying the guilt trip on me.

I completely missed out on the "organizing genes"--I'm pretty much a mess. I know "generally" what is in my stash, but I don't have it organized on ravelry either. But I love that other people do, I've found yarn there that I needed to match a dye lot!  Great post on "itemization", are you going to risk the random word generator again? lol

I haven't itemised my stash either .... I like the surprise of finding something I've forgotten about when I go looking for something else :)

I actually could - I use the feature on Ravelry for my stash.  I am even nerdy enough to take photos and list all of it when I get it home.

I'm pretty familiar with my stash...but only because I've used the ravelry stash feature. Before that I was a mess and had no idea what I had.

I'm not super organized but I do have a general knowledge of what I have.  The answer to that being "too much!"  ;-D  I need to downsize my stash - it's beyond ridiculous and taking up way too much room.

Since my husband is not in the room I can safely ask - whatdya got LOL jk jk jk :)

Yup - another happy Ravelry Stash Tool user. I really should just sit down and "do it"

HA! I had that moment last night. I was digging for 5 cakes of wool I bought at the LYS to make a scarf with.... and in that bag, was a gloriously soft burgundy hank I'd forgotten about :P

Definitely handy!

oooo see, I need to get me some of that stash yarn! (or better yet, the hubs wants me to get some of that stash yarn hehehe)

From what I can tell from others, if you start using it now when your stash is small, you won't have any problems with a bigger stash.

Oh, a very good point! I am left to holding up a ball of yarn and wondering just how much there is hehehe

I could answer what's in it, but not where it is. I think I'm allowed though since it's all packed in boxesin my mum's dining room. I just wish I could find my cable needle. Now needles are a different matter, I seem to buy a new set for every project...
