What a great idea!  My kitty wouldn't sleep in a bed but my doggie might if I make it big enough.  Thanks for the idea!

Cris said...

Yup - all you have to do is keep increasing evenly until it's big enough for your poochy :)

Strzelcz said...

What size Super Saver:  The 7 oz solid color or the 14 oz solid (used to be a pounder).  Would help if patterns gave "weight" of skein so we knew what to buy.

Cris said...

You are very correct! I always forget about the "big 'uns" - it's the regular 244 yard skein. I'll add that to the pattern.

Awwww, i really like this pet pattern, so cute. You sure did a great job on this. thank you for the pattern

I have a Lab mix weighing about 69 lbs, so how many stitches do I need 2 do 2 make it big enough 4 her?   She likes sleeping under our kitchen table, and that's messing up the rug.  I think if I make it really 'roomy' so she's not on the rug, I've got to make it at least 40-50 inches long and maybe 4o inches wide?  She measures about 37 inches in length and 29 inches around her middle...what do U think?  Beginner here BTW!  lol!

PoetsSoul said...

BTW,  I'd like 2 make it double thick...how much more 4 that?  Any help here 4 a beginner?

Cris said...

Hi there! Great question - I cannot say how much yarn you would need off hand, but I'm going to guess around 4-5 skeins, if not a couple more. Basically, stick with the pattern of the increase (1 dc, 2dc in next stitch...... 2 dc, 2 dc in next stitch.... ) increasing the number of dc's between each dc increase. It goes up about an inch and a half per round. Basically, make 2 circles the same size. You could get some foam to slide in between if you wanted to make it really cushy for her.

i think this a great way to help out! I will definately be making these beds for our local shelter. Thank you for sharing.

I have a large lab/golden mix, and find that when he lays down, he always curls up, so a 36" round is large enough for him.  Though he's a constant shedder, his legs don't shed for the most part, so that's not an issue.
Good luck!

Soooo cute! and such a great idea! I know I'll be making a few of these to give away. (:

Cfwil2 said...

I too will make some for our rescue center/shelter. Great idea and it will give me a way to keep up my skills since I've been away from crocheting for awhile.

I love this!!!!  I found some yarn in my stash.  It is yellows and oranges and greens. I showed it to all my children and they hated it.  But, I am so thrifty (cheap) that I can't get rid of it.  THEN I saw this fabulous pattern and now my wonderful cat, Newt, has a new bed!!  Thank you!

Cris said...

Fantastic! I cannot stand to throw yarn away either - great use.. and I'm sure Newt agrees :)

naana8 said...

instead of making 2 circles and crocheting them together, wouldn't it be easier to use 2 stands of yarn at once?

Cris said...

Yes, but usually to do that a person uses 2 skeins of yarn. It is easier than separating the ball and having to know exactly how much needs to be in each AND accommodate that 1 ball will need to be bigger because of the sides. Of course, you also have the option to put foam or batting in between the two circles. If you use 2 strands together, you lose this option.

I'm getting a cat tomorrow that I will be fostering for a local rescue. She is pregnant and due in a couple of weeks. This is awesome for her so she ca have a comfy place to rest.

Lorrie said...

what a great idea - I'm going to make up some for our local Animal Shelter.

Valael1981 said...

Great pattern! I plan on making a couple for my 2 cats and a few for friends and family who adore their pets!

Duesrad said...

I volunteer at a local shelter. Would they be able to sell what I donate to raise money for the shelter?

Cris said...

I don't see why not - they should be able to sell items as fund raisers (their licensing and stuff) for their organization. Most shelters are not-for-profit organizations so they have all the technicals of selling items taken care of. As for selling these because they are my pattern - I don't care :) I think if they can get some money from it - then YAY! Another way to help

Teresanj said...

How can I enlarge  the pattern for a dog ra dog about 15 lbs?

Cris said...

Just keep doing the increase rounds, increasing the number of dc's between each dc-increase. You will end up using more than a skein but you can definitely make it bigger.

Belle Russell said...

I added some plastic canvas strips inside the rim, to help it stand up and give it a little body. Thank you so much for offering this pattern free to us... My Honey is getting me a new puppy and I made one of these to have all ready for when she can leave her mama.. :)

Cris said...

Great idea!!! Congrats on your soon-to-arrive puppy! :)

Tamara from Moogly said...

Such a great pattern, and I love that you talk about donating them! I linked to the pattern on my blog this morning, if you want to check it out: http://www.mooglyblog.com/free-crochet-patterns-for-cat-lovers/ :) Thank you for sharing your pattern!

Cris said...

Thank you so much for the mention on your blog! I really do appreciate it :)

mathom said...

I think this is super. Especially since using acrylic yarn means you can toss it in the washing machine whenever it needs it.

jamie said...

Lol love the pattern but the only one of my three cats that will fit in it is the 6 month old kitten lol I'll def need to make a lot of increases :p

Cris said...

I think then your skeins are not a standard length as this pattern will land in the 11" diameter range - large enough for a 10 pound cat... unless all of your cats are super large except the kitten! hehe (which is totally possible, my 25 pounder doesn't fit these beds)

Cris said...

Definitely!

Unknown said...

Wonderful pattern. I will definitely make some more of these for shelter and also gifts for my friends that have furbabies! Thanks!

Gigi0605 said...

This is so lovely of you to design and share. I have some extra skeins of RHSS and also have four rescue pets. I will make some of these and donate them to some local rescues. Blessings to you for thinking of all the little shelter animals who need some extra love.

Thanks I was looking for something new to do and helpful for the animals

I work at an animal shelter thanks for uploading the pattern I'm now making all the critters beds :)

Deborah Lucas said...

How would you adapt this to two Boxers about 65 and 80 lbs, respectively? Thanks.
Deb

Cris said...

For the round bed, just repeat row 12 more before you fold it over and secure it to the base. Just remember, the taller it gets, the floppier it will become unless you put something inside to reinforce it.

Chris Burris said...

Thank you.

Janie-Poo said...

Thank you! Not only is this blog informational it's inspirational. My friend runs a feline rescue so I started making the bed for her to sell to raise money for the rescue. A friend of mine is making some for it now, too. With the floppy sides I started crocheting a 'belt' to go inside the edge and still be machine washable.

The goosebump moment was that I found you by looking for a pattern to make a bed for my cat who I inherited from a woman named "Cris".

Janie-Poo said...

I should note they are being donated to rescue. Not that I'm selling them for it.

Cris said...

Its quite alright if you sold them - I don't mind at all :) As for how you found me - o.O!

muffin said...

thank you alot i hav looked every where 4 a pet bed this is the best pattern i hav found i also like how u made them for shelters and how u can make 1 with 1 skein i made this other bed with 4 skeins and it didnt even work made the round bed with some left over yarn and me an my cat adore it thx!

muffin said...

could u post a picture of ur cat or dog (if u hav any) in the beds?

Cris said...

I actually wanted to do that BUT my cat sleeps in a basket on a table in the living room (she was in the bed for approximately 2 minutes before turning her snobby nose up at it LOL). She's not so good at helping in the marketing department *laughs* My dog... well, he's a wee bit too large BUT I post pictures of them (in general) all the time :)

Angel Laffoon said...

loved this!! Where can I send you My pictures? MY cats loved it.

creationsbycris@comcast.net - can't wait to see them!

Jasmine said...

Hi. I'm going to donate to the shelters too and love the pattern but I'm confused with the mentioning of 2 circles the same size. Why do we need 2 circles and not one? Am I making two beds? help :)

Cris said...

The second circle is ONLY If you are doing a double thickness pet bed; otherwise, just stick with the one circle with the edge.

Trishy12 said...

Jasmine - It is my understanding that you are making two bottom circles the same size, which will be sewn/crocheted together to give the bed extra cushion and weight. It also allows you to add batting in between the two circles to make it even more cushy.

Trishy12 said...

Chris - thank you so much for this pattern! I've just started working with a new rescue group and all 4 of us have been crafting like crazy to make things to sell at fundraising events to make money for the rescue. I'm so glad you've given us permission to use the beds we make for such purposes! I can't wait to get started!

Cris said...

It is the LEAST I could do. I think its great what you are doing and wish you the absolute best success

lala said...

Thank you for this pattern. Have so many partial skeins. Have made the round already and working on the rectangle one. Am planning on after I get a few done giving them to the SPCA.

Lorraine said...

This came out really small. Tore it apart, will keep looking. Thanks for posting anyway.

Mike M. said...

Your gauge must be really large. I'm getting about a half-inch a round. To hit the 11" size stated above for 9 rds, I'm going to have to do more like 22rds (probably shoot for more, my cat is fairly big). Just a note to help those who crochet fairly tightly, like myself.

Cris said...

That is odd because I actually crochet extremely tightly (as in sometime my hook will squeak) ... very very odd.

stefaniel said...

Looks great. Another idea would be to do it in t-yarn (yarn out of old t-shirts) I love recycling and have started one in that because I use odd wool for toy making. Thanks for the pattern :)

Vie said...

First of all, thank you for thinking of all the rescue cats and small dogs for this project. A perfect project for a group or one to donate to shelters. Acrylic yarns make them great for laundering.
Can you do these in wool yarn and 'felt' them? If so, how would you make the pattern larger to allow for the shrinkage when felted?

Cris said...

Great idea!!!

Cris said...

I think you would be able to felt them - I would think you would just need to add a couple rounds to the base of the pattern to give it a wider diameter - then add 1 row to the "edge" of the bed.

Carolyn Murray said...

If you pick up magazine "Crochet 1 - 2 - 3 magazine and to to pg 16 you will find the pattern and other essentials you need. I just started it yesterday and it seems pretty easy. It's just that I am relearning crocheting and I am having trouble seeing what is single crochet stitch and what is 2 singles in a stitch. I haven't got my eyes trained yet and I keep getting lost where I am. Any help anyone> I took classes Sunday, but I need a few more. But, if you want to make this bed check out the magazine. I'm working on it, but I need a trick to see what I am looking at, I have to count stitches.

Cris said...

What do you mean "make this bed check out the magazine" .... is it in the magazine????? If so, I think I have some emailing to do LOL

Carolyn Murray said...

I am not planning on selling any of the beds I plan on making, just giving them to the shelters. But, I am slow since I am relearning to crochet. And how is this your pattern when it is already in a magazine, Crochet 1 - 2- 3, and associated with "for the cause" and "Comfort for Critters"?

Cris said...

Because I wrote this pattern on my own and posted it well over a year ago.... when I looked at the magazine entry online (it was 1 issue ago), it is NOT the same as my pattern. If it was, then I would have a case against them because it is obvious I wrote this quite a while ago. It would be copyright infringement against them - not me.

There is nothing stopping anyone from selling any finished good from a pattern - so if people wanted to sell it they could legally - but I like that the people using this pattern are either creating it for their own pets or for donation.

Linda Bevier-Vian said...

SECOND NOTE: If you want your bed to be bigger around than what this one is, you can do so by adding rows between Row 9 and 10, working 1 more dc between the increase (2dc in same st). Of course, if you do this, you will be using more yarn meaning you will not be able to complete the square mat or do the double thickness round bed. Just buy 2 skeins of yarn if you want to go bigger (this one holds a standard house cat).

Linda Bevier-Vian said...

I think instead of makeing 2 circles I would just double the yarn. Use two skeins. It would be fun to mix and match colors.

I used two skeins, doubled up the thread. Then I cut up some old sheets and used them inside the side flaps. Makes it not floppy and gives the kitty something firmer to lay her head on, and also something to rub on. Thanks so much for the pattern!

Shirlsi said...

I crochet these in various (mostly larger) sizes out of tarn (t-shirt yarn) and donate to shelters. They send them home with the dogs, etc., and gives them a bit of comfort of something they know in going into a new home. They love 'em.

Thank you so very much for sharing your pattern. I love it. Making 4 for my cats and 1 for my dog.

I even have been getting a lot of helpful and informative material in your web site.Dog beds for boxer

I tried to make a bed for my dog but it didn't lay flat. It bunches up at every DC increase point.

I love your patterns. I am going to make some beds and mats for our local Shelter. I have four Dachshund girls. Two are out of my 14 rescues and the last beautiful girl is 14 years old and her health is not good. She is having a very hard time going up the steps to the couch. I want to make one of your beds for her and make it so special for her so she is comfortable and feels like a Queen. Any suggestions? She is use to sleeping with me as is the other three girls. I need to get them to sleep in their beds now as I just had major back surgery and being nearly 73 it is not healing. So it is doggy bed creating time. Suggestions????? Thanks for sharing your patterns. I love love them.

If this comes out small it may be because what is described as double crochet in the instructions appears to be treble crochet in the photo. It's the difference between US and UK terminology. Try making it using trebles and half-trebles if it comes out too small.
