S is for Scarves

This post is almost a gimme as far as I'm concerned.

Pointed Granny Scarf
Simply put - I love to make scarves. I don't know why but ever since I was little, scarves are the bees knees for me. I like to crochet them. I enjoy knitting them. I don't know what it is about scarves other than the simplicity of going in one direction for a set amount of time to create a useful, warm, lovely item.

Another little factoid - I rarely go back and make a matching hat and gloves. In fact, I don't think I've successfully ever made a pair of gloves or mittens or wristlets. For some reason, that part of the body eludes my capabilities not for lack of trying. *laughs*

Caterpillar Scarf
I think another major advantage to making scarves is that they are always needed. If no one in my family needs one, there are PLENTY of charitable organizations that can. As soon as school is over I'll begin my march towards making scarves for the 2012 Special Olympics. I will make some for the homeless shelters here. I plan on making some for Bridge and Beyond.

Simple Knitted Two Cable Scarf
When I start teaching anyone to crochet, the first thing I tell them is to make something with the stitch they just learned. It'll be a simple design, but it'll give them PLENTY of practice with the stitch and teach them tension relatively quickly. To top it off, not only are they practicing,
they are making something that is useful. Obviously I suggest a scarf (but we all know that a dishcloth will work just as good.... I just like scarves more. *laughs*)

It's funny, I made 3 scarves when I first started knitting and none since. I don't really like my first one (garter stitch in scratchy wool), I made one in eyelash yarn for my mum (never again!) and a ribbed chunky one for my brother that can stand up on its own! I have made a couple of cowls since, but I think it's about time I made a scarf I actually like!

I'm the same way with fingerless gloves.  I know that I only have two hands but I just keep on making gloves.  It's good to have a favourite thing to knit/crochet.

What a great collection of scarves you have - and that box for the Special Olympics is wonderful.

I like scarves too.  I've made several.  I think it's lovely that you make them and give them away.  You are a woman after my own heart!

I was chuckling at how you didn't make the matching hat and mitts, but then I saw the charity knitting you're doing and was very touched.  Thank you for posting the link.  I'm going to share it with my knitting group.

Thank you - that was my first attempt at cabling :)

Charity crochet is important to me. My daughter took a lesson in school about "filling someone else's bucket" - ie compliment someone and their figurative bucket gets fuller - but so does yours because making someone else feel better makes you feel better too. I am pretty sure charity crochet fills others buckets cuz I always feel good whenever I send them off.
